Fitness in 100 words

  • “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, c&j, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports. ”

To look on the bright side, this is a good way for me to work off those burpees I earned on the weekend.

Great effort from all the athletes over the past few days. Your resolve and the effort you put in made judging you an honour. Congratulations to those people that qualified.

Sharif

Does this count as our penalty burpees????

Virgil

I call "rest day" :)

Sharif

Virg I'd be surprised if anyone that competed this weekend was in the box tomorrow!

Wendy S

Sharif, it ABSOLUTELY COUNTS! And given how many names are on the board I would think maybe the gym will be full???
:-) Wendy

Sharif

Well I was wondering if perhaps it was programmed because some of the guys that earned penalty burpees might still be around. Here I was thinking that we couldn't count a programmed WOD as the penalty.

Cassius

Lord I hope it counts towards that penalty board!

liz

I think it is a testament to how much I hate burpees, that the 2nd choice looks better to me. See you in the morning guys.

Stacy

Thank god it's rest day for me :-)
Good luck with the Burpees!!!
Thank you Matt, Danny, Wendy, Donna and the rest of the Crossfit Brisbane Crew for a fantastic weekend. Very inspirational! Loads of fun!

I am not very strong, not very fast and not very fit, so I was pretty nervous about competing on the weekend to say the least. I am happy I did now. For those who haven't yet entered a crossfit event - being around so many awesome athletes is pretty rewarding and motivational. Personally, the people who inspired me the most though, were the men and women who showed guts, rather than the athletes with the best times. The guys and girls who toughed it out when they were hurting and refused to give up or give in to the pain. They were the people who were truly inspirational to me. Thank you all.

Why are they called Burpees? I have never burped during them. I get dizzy and want to pewk but they dont call them Pewkees or Dizzies? Yet another of life's mysteries.

Steve Musgrove

Awesome event on the weekend guys. It was planned and executed to perfection. I did not hear one single negative comment all weekend, which is not something which has happened at any other event which I have ever attended. It was quite the opposite - everyone got behind everyone. Awesome atmosphere!! Everyone from the organisers, the volunteers, the spectators and athletes should all be proud of themselves.

On a side note - did you find Clay's squats while cleaning up last night? He lost them before the first WOD. I had a quick look for them yesterday but couldn't find them. The last time I saw him with them was in the warm-up area.

Cheers

Jimmy

The fear and anxiety around doing 150 reps of anything is always worse than actually doing them.

Gerard

Agreed Sharif.

Watching Micah and Yvette do burpee pull-ups this morning was inspirational.

Brad

Looking at the trainer's workout times today- clearly Matt you have mastered the snatch movement as it applies to crossfit! :-)

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed on the weekend outstanding results.
My plan was to perform tabata for each exercise but didn't have access to tabata clock and trying to figure out the times on my mobile hurt my brain my next experiment will be Tabata Fran...

Markus Maximus

"The exercise may have been originated by a man named Lieutenant Thomas Burpee (1757-1839). He was an officer in the New Hampshire Militia during the American Revolutionary War and was described as “having the innate Burpee fondness for martial exercises” in A History of the Town of New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Lt. Burpee may have used the combination of pushups and squat thrusts as a means of drilling, conditioning, and disciplining the troops under his command".

Matt G

to add to you Burpees story and how it continued on into folk law. Lt Burpee died of his wounds during the war.

Following the Civil War, as the former soldiers were released back into the world, some fell into lives of crime. Criminals eventually find themselves incarcerated, whether in jails or prisons, and New England certainly had no shortage of those. Those New England inmates who used to be soldiers in the 21st Regiment incorporated “Burpee’s exercises” into their daily routine to combat boredom and to stay in shape for fighting on the inside. Other inmates no doubt saw the benefits that came with daily “burpee” exercises and added them to their own daily routines. As these inmates were transferred to different jails and prisons around the country over the years, the “burpee” followed along with them, entering the fitness and exercise lore as a workout that originated in the prison system. As it appears, however, the burpee may have been born instead in the long military history of New England.

liz

Thanks Markus and Matt for those bits of trivia. I had often wondered myself - though not enough to google it. I can't imagine being remembered for so loathed an exercise though. I started with burpee pullups, but quickly bailed due to ripping my hands. Well done Yvette and Micah for seeing it through!

After today's WOD, I actually don't hate burpees anymore! And failing to finish was also motivating (nowhere to go but up), as was watching Yvette and Micah cane the jumping ones, my god.

Matt and Danny and all the volunteers, great work on the weekend. Everything looked to be running smoothly and there were lots of smiling faces. Some impressive performances and times too. Really cool to see what people are capable of.
